SPANISH FORK, Utah — The Utah County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect in a series of shootings that left one officer dead and another critically injured Thursday afternoon.

Jose Angel Garcia Jauregui, 27, allegedly opened fire on Sgt. Cory Wride in Eagle Mountain and Dep. Greg Sherwood in Santaquin.

Wride was killed and Sherwood was critically injured in the shootings. On Friday, officials announced that Jauregui had died due to injuries he sustained during the incident.

According to Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy, Jauregui was convicted of attempted homicide in 2007 and was also convicted for assaulting a fellow prisoner.

Jauregui served four and a half years in prison and was released by a board of pardons. He was serving time on attempted murder and aggravated homicide charges in connection with an altercation that took place in 2007.

Jauregui had allegedly gotten into an argument at a party, calmed down, and then resumed the fight while giving the victim a ride home from the party. Jauregui allegedly struck the victim and stabbed him repeatedly with a screw driver. According to court documents, “excessive alcohol was involved and Garcia Juaregui claimed self-defense.”

The board of pardons issued a warrant for Jauregui a few days ago, Tracy said, making him a fugitive at the time of the shootings Thursday.

Another suspect, who Tracy described as a minor female, was not identified. Tracy confirmed she is in custody.
