UTAH COUNTY, Utah -- One of the injured deputies in Thursday's shooting is Sgt. Greg Sherwood, and he remains in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center recovering from surgery for a gunshot wound to his head.
Authorities said he was struck at least once as he engaged the suspect in a high speed chase in Santaquin. He is still listed in critical condition but is stable.
Roy Henrichsen lives next door to Sherwood, and he spoke about the tragedy.
"I'm sad that this happens to anyone, but it seems closer to home when it's your neighbor," he said. "I know they've considered risks like this before because of the profession he is in. You hope it never comes, but it did come for Greg.”
Sgt. Sherwood's wife, Gina, released a statement Friday that says:
"We want to thank everyone who has reached out in support of Greg and our family. Greg is breathing on his own and talking to us and the doctors. His surgery went very well and we are told he may be able to leave the hospital in less than a week. Our son and I greatly appreciate the support of our family and friends, including everyone from our police family. Greg is very concerned about the Wride family and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time."
Sgt. Sherwood is a 13-year law enforcement veteran, serving with the Utah County Sheriff's Office the last two years as a K9 handler. Those who know Sgt. Sherwood speak highly of his entire family.
"He's a very nice guy and his wife is wonderful, and they have a boy that's a good kid too,” Henrichsen said.
