SALT LAKE CITY – Divorce has become increasingly common, and a new documentary delves into the costs that accrue when divorced parents fight custody battles.

The new documentary is called “Divorce Corp” and it aims to educate people about the expenses people face upon filing for divorce and fighting to be with their children.

Janet Robins is the co-chair of the Utah affiliate of the National Parents Organization, and she said divorce is a big business. She said courts don’t have incentives to move through divorce proceedings quickly, and that can have a big impact on parents.

“I’ve seen parent’s go bankrupt,” she said. “Literally bankrupt. Lose their houses, lose their cars. I’ve seen some parents lose their jobs because they spent so much time in court. Like I said, it’s not uncommon for me to hear numbers of $10,000, $50,000, even $100,000– I’ve met people who have spent close to a million dollars in the court system trying to get things resolved.”

Robins said some parents eventually give up on the fight, as they lack the time and financial resources to continue.
