PROVO, Utah – Buildings thousands of Brigham Young University students called home over the last several decades are being demolished to make way for new campus housing.

The student housing complex Heritage Halls is being torn down as newer student housing facilities are in the works.

The project began in 2005 when other, older housing facilities were torn down. The 24 buildings were originally built to serve as housing for unmarried female students, but in recent years nearly half of the residents were males. The more modern dorms are expected to be finished in 2015.

BYU Spokesman Todd Hollingshead said they are on track to meet that predicted completion date.

“Everything is on schedule,” he said. “August 2015 is still a year and a half out there, so they’re beginning this next phase, so there’s a ways to go, but right now everything’s on schedule.”

The new construction will add four new residence halls on the campus, which will bring the total of new buildings to 12.
