SALT LAKE CITY – Many Americans will honor and remember Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, and a local religious school focused on serving others Sunday as a way to honor Dr. King’s memory.

The Rafi Schwartz Religious School hosted Mitzvah Day Sunday, and participants worked to provide those in need in their community with things like blankets, sack lunches and other items.

Liz Paige is the president of Congregation Kol Ami, and she said they chose to hold the event near the holiday celebrating Dr. King for a reason.

"We thought that the Martin Luther King Day weekend was the perfect opportunity for us to come together as a Jewish community, as Jewish families, to talk about Doctor King, his life, and his legacy, and the continuation of the work that we must do to repair the world,” Paige said.

Those who attended also made cards for the elderly and sick as well as for children in developing countries.
