SALT LAKE CITY  -- A Utah conservative group meets before the start of each Utah legislative session, and Saturday they expressed their position on several hot button social issues.

The convention for the Utah Eagle Forum began at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Salt Lake City, and it continued until 6 p.m.

Maryann Christensen is the vice president of operations for the Utah Eagle Forum, and she spoke about their cause.

“For a long time with the homosexual agenda, it's ended up in people losing their religious liberty,” she said.

Christensen said the group is opposing Senate Bill 262--sponsored by State Senator Steve Urquhart, R-District 29. The bill would add protections against discrimination for gay and transgender individuals in housing and the workplace.

"This year in the legislature there is going to be another bill, an anti-discrimination bill, that creates a new protected class, and we're very much opposed to that,” Christensen said. “...We're opposed to the changes that will bring to society, and to school locker rooms, and bathrooms, and we're concerned about the exposure our children will have if that passes."

At the event, members said they also oppose the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which is a set of standards students are expected to meet in math and English. The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association.
