ST. GEORGE, Utah — A 41-year-old Oklahoma man was hit and killed Thursday afternoon while trying to cross Interstate 15 near St. George.

It happened around 1:40 on southbound I-15 near mile post 5. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, John Madison of Muskogee, Oklahoma was trying to walk or run from the west side of the freeway to the east side when he was struck by a Toyota Highlander towing a small U-Haul trailer.

The driver of the Highlander swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting Madison, but struck him with the front right of the vehicle.

The victim’s head came in contact with the windshield and he launched into the air, landing near the middle of the freeway, a statement from UHP said.

The driver of the Toyota pulled to the left side of the freeway and stopped a short distance down the road.

Officials from the St. George Fire Department responded to the scene and the freeway was partially closed for approximately 45 minutes.

Madison was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the Toyota has fully cooperated with the investigation and is not suspected of being impaired, the UHP statement said.
