(CNN)– Starting early next year, about five million vending machines nationwide will be required to display calorie information.

The new FDA regulations apply to more than 10,000 vending machine companies nationwide that operate twenty or more machines. The result will be similar to the calorie count menus in restaurants.

In vending machines, customers will see the calories next to their snack choice.

The FDA hopes this will help consumers go for alternatives that will help them stick to their new year’s resolutions. The FDA estimates if just 0.02% of obese adults ate 100 fewer calories per week, it would save $24 million or more in annual health care costs.
