TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Police are searching for a man who allegedly fired shots at pursuers after he tried to steal a vehicle in Taylorsville Monday night.

Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department said a woman turned on her car to warm it up near 1100 West and 3800 South and then went inside. When she came back outside, she saw two people attempting to steal her vehicle.

“When she went back out to get in the car to leave she found an adult male and an adult female inside the vehicle trying to steal it,” he said. “Fortunately she had an anti-theft device, and the suspects were not able to leave with the car.”

A man inside an apartment heard the incident and came outside to help the woman chase the suspects. Hoyal said the male suspect fired two shots toward his pursuers. The man was able to catch one of the suspects, an 18-year-old female, and detain her until police arrived.

Police are working to identify the second suspect, who is a man believed to be in his ‘20s. The 18-year-old female was taken into custody to be interviewed by detectives.

There were no injuries reported. Police ask anyone with information about the suspect to call officers at 801-743-7000
