OGDEN -- It’s usually just the trek from car to class that causes Kelsey Kap to shiver – but the eighth grader noticed her first period class wasn’t as warm and welcoming as she’d hoped.

“It was cold,” Kap said. “Our teacher told us to pull out our journals and write.”

The Highland Junior High School principal soon made an announcement over the intercom announcing classes would be cancelled because boiler pipes had burst, which shut down the heating system.

“Because of the issue with the heating system the decision was made that it would be in the best interest of the students and faculty and staff to be comfortable and safe to make that call -- it’s really a case by case basis,” said Zac Williams, spokesman with Ogden School District.

Maintenance crews worked on the pipes from tunnels beneath the school. After a few hours of work the frozen campus began to defrost. Heat was restored at around noon.

Williams said class will resume Tuesday.

Kap was happy with the unexpected holiday.

“It was cool,” the eighth grader said.

School officials said the state issues waivers for unexpected school closures so it’s likely the students will not have to make up the missed day.
