SALT LAKE CITY – The Sugar House streetcar will open very soon, and on Wednesday officials invited FOX 13 News along to see how the new transit system rides.

The car, part of the S-Line, connects the TRAX system at 2100 South 200 West and runs to McClelland Street in Sugar House.

Remi Barron, Utah Transit Authority spokesman, said the streetcar is expected to help reduce congestion in the area.

“It's pedestrian friendly, easy to get on and off, close to businesses,” he said. “You don't have to park. Parking in Sugar House, South Salt Lake, can be a little bit of a hassle. This takes the hassle out of that."

The streetcar officially opens Sunday, but people can ride the streetcar for free Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. if they bring a can of food to donate to the Utah Food Bank. A grand opening celebration event is planned for Thursday.
