ST. LOUIS (KTVI) — Sometimes Dan Drake has to picture the pancake before he can make perfection.

“A lot of times when folks request things I’ll draw myself a little helper,” says Dan Drake.

Monday, this Picasso of pancakes was pouring the blue note for the first time.

His creations at the Courtesy Diner in South St. Louis are gaining internet fame.

“There’s an irony to the fact that it’s my day job that`s making me famous,” says Drake aka Dr. Dan the Pancake Man.

His hotcakes are selling faster than, well, you know. And with customers coming in for custom creations, Drake who is also an artist, musician and rapper is wrapped up midday`s at the diner.

“What was the first thing you made?” asks Patrick Clark.

“Really it was just a really big stupid looking smiley face,” says Drake. “That smiley face, oh shoot, I did it backwards.”

Any rendition Drake makes has to be in reverse, for when he flips his flapjack masterpiece. And as for his forward looking future, he foresees a food truck.

“A lot of the attention I’m getting is not from St. Louis,” says Drake. “A lot of it because it’s through the internet is folks who have no way of coming to me to get my pancakes.”

A man, a plan, a pancake. Expect big things from this handcrafter of hotcakes.

“The classic, or my classic anyway,” says Drake making a giant mushroom. “See its easy cause it’s a big old dollop of batter. Whenever I serve a Mario pancake I always go, doo-doo-doo doo doo doo, womp. And then I go back and finish cooking.”

After all, it takes practice to be a guru with a griddle.
