SALT LAKE CITY – A man was killed in a rollover accident on I-215 East Thursday, and the northbound ramp to I-80 eastbound is closed.

Police identified the victim as 46-year-old Steven T. Parker.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said the accident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. when a man traveling north on I-215 lost control of his vehicle.

The man was traveling north on I-215 East at the ramp to take I-80 East into the canyon. According to a press release from the Utah Highway Patrol, the vehicle drove onto the right shoulder, up an embankment and then vaulted over the bridge at 3000 South.

The vehicle hit a large pole with its top and landed on the north side of the embankment of I-80 westbound. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flame, and Parker died before units arrived on scene.

Police said it wasn't clear what caused the driver to veer onto the shoulder and over the embankment.

The northbound ramp to I-80 Eastbound is closed, and I-80 westbound traffic is being routed onto the ramp to I-215.

There were no other injuries reported, and the deceased man was the only occupant of the vehicle.
