OGDEN, Utah — Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation said Saturday that State Road 65, the Big Mountain Highway, is now closed to all traffic for the winter season.

SR-65 is closed between mile post 14, south of the East Canyon Resort, Morgan County, and mile post 3 near the Emigration Canyon Road turn-off in Salt Lake County.

According to a press release from UDOT, the closure came earlier in the season than expected due to higher than anticipated snowfall, and the length of the road will remain out of service to all vehicles until approximately May of 2014.

According to the press release, “This highway is closed for the winter months each year due to traveler safety concerns combined with the prohibitive costs of keeping it clear of snow and open to traffic.  Motorists should use I-84 and SR-66 via Morgan, and SR-65 via Henefer to access East Canyon Reservoir during this winter closure.”
