MAGNA, Utah – Authorities responded to a house fire in Magna after a man who allegedly attempted to kill himself by overdosing on drugs set a home on fire in a second attempt at suicide but survived.

Personnel from the Unified Police Department and the Unified Fire Authority responded to a home near 9050 West and 2881 South in Magna Friday evening.

Officials said police were working with a man who was threatening suicide. The man reportedly attempted to kill himself by overdosing on drugs, and when that failed he allegedly set the house on fire. As the flames spread, the man jumped from a window and escaped the home.

The fire was extinguished as of about 8 p.m. after it burned one room of the house and its contents.

The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. UFA officials said the man will undergo a psychiatric evaluation, after which officials will determine whether or not to pursue arson charges.
