OGDEN, Utah -- An Ogden man was taken into custody after a standoff with police that lasted several hours, officials said early Sunday morning.

At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday Ogden Police responded to the 800 block of North Dillon Drive on a report of a disturbance, said Lt. Will Cragun with Ogden Police.

While officers were en route to the scene, police said, a woman called stating that her 41-year-old son threatened her and her husband with a handgun and fired one round inside.

The couple got out of the house and the suspect, later identified by police as Kenneth Reed, reportedly barricaded himself in the basement. Cragun said the suspect and officers reportedly exchanged fire briefly. No one was injured.

According to a press release from Ogden police, the suspect was armed with "a Mossberg .22 long rifle that looked like an AR-15 and a Hi-Point .45 caliber pistol."

When police arrived, Reed was threatening to blow up the house using the gas line. Officers tried several times to talk Reed into coming outside, and at one point the suspect began approaching officers with his weapon pointed at them, according to the press release. Officers fired at Reed while retreating to a safer position.

Reed made numerous threats about killing officers and also told officers to kill him, according to the press release.

Two neighbors were evacuated during the incident.

The Ogden Metro SWAT Team arrived on scene and made verbal contact with the suspect. At approximately 4 a.m. a canine was sent into the house and took the suspect down. The man was then taken into custody without further incident. Reed was given medical assistance on scene and was then transported to McKay-Dee Hospital for additional treatment.

Cragun said the investigation process will begin to determine what the man will be charged with.

“We do know that we’re dealing with a domestic situation,” he said.

The officers who discharged their weapons are currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
