(CNN) — Getting the recommended amount of sleep at night is impossible for many people, but now some doctors are warning of a health threat for people getting too much shut-eye.

Experts tell CNN a little bit of extra sleep is OK from time to time, but consistently oversleeping can be bad for our health.

It can cause short-term problems: sleeping too much can make you groggy, out of it and slow. That’s referred to by doctors as sleep drunkenness.

It can also cause more dangerous long-term problems like thyroid diseases, kidney and liver disease, depression and dementia.

Doctors say there are certain times when you do need more sleep than usual, like when you are recovering from sickness or surgery or adjusting to time zone differences.
