SALT LAKE CITY -- A man accused of vandalizing a synagogue was back in court Thursday for an arraignment, where he plead not guilty.

Macon Michael Openshaw, 21, is accused of firing off rounds from a handgun at the Kol Ami synagogue in Salt Lake City in January of 2012 through April of 2012. The shots broke windows and damaged a window frame of the building.

Openshaw has since been charged with a civil rights violation relating to what attorneys call a bias motivated attack, along with several firearm charges.

Openshaw's attorney's said their client comes from a troubled background. They said he came from a broken home, and was in and out of various foster homes while growing up.

The trial will begin in January 2014.
