Civilian jail employee accused of sexual assault of a minor

CARBONVILLE, Utah – Price Police arrested a man and booked him into jail Wednesday on sexual assault charges involving minors, and the man is a civilian employee at the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Jail.

According to a press release from the Price Police Department, 35-year-old John Gerald Shiew has been placed on administrative leave at the jail pending an internal departmental investigation.

Shiew was booked into the Emery County Jail on the following charges: rape, a first-degree felony; aggravated sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony; child abuse, a class A misdemeanor; two counts of enticing a minor, a class A misdemeanor; two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class B misdemeanor; and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor.

Carbon County Attorney Gene Strate said the alleged offenses did not occur at the jail and involved two juvenile females. Strate said formal charges are pending.
