SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Council unanimously approved to send a letter to the governor’s office requesting he look at a medical waste facility in North Salt Lake to see if it is in compliance with air quality laws.

Although Stericycle is in Davis County the letter states the council believes the facility has health implications for Salt Lake County residents.

Stericycle has been the center of controversy for several months. It came under fire after reportedly falsifying documents and emitting more pollution than their permit allowed.

Dozens of homeowners have protested the facility concerned about the emissions from the facility.

Leading their fight is Dr. Brian Moench with the Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment.

“This is a health hazard, a serious health hazard,” Moench said in an interview last month.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich joined residents in a protest last month to have the facility company shut down.
