PARK CITY -- A groundbreaking ceremony took place Tuesday in Park City for a 300,000-square-foot movie studio.

While many movies are filmed in Utah’s outdoor settings, filmmakers and actors head back to Hollywood to finish filming and editing indoors in a studio or soundstage. The concept behind Park City Studios is to lure more films to the state and keep them here longer.

Park City Studios will be the next generation of motion picture and television studios, said Greg Ericksen, president of the studios.

“We’ve got major producers talking to us right now that want to film major films here and we’re going to do everything we can to accommodate them,” Ericksen said.

There will be more than 300,000 square feet of production facilities on the outskirts of Park City. The first phase of construction is expected to be finished by next fall. The studio complex will also have a hotel where casts and crews of movies can stay onsite.

The studio will be paid for by private investors.
