SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake City Council and some members of the community took to the streets to discuss a plan that aims to make Sugar House more pedestrian and bicycle friendly.

The Sugar House Circulation and Streetscape Amenities Plan is a proposal that calls for expanding the Monument and Sugarmont plazas, connecting Parley’s Trail between the Fairmont Aquatic Center and Hidden Hollow, and making streets and lighting more uniform.

Council members were out and about seeking public feedback on the idea. Sugar House resident George Chapman said it’s not a plan that appeals to him.

“I was against the plan in general because there are not enough parking requirements in it, and it imposes parking on the adjacent single family homeowners and the old time businesses,” he said.

Kyle Lamalfa, Salt Lake City Council chair, said parking won’t be as problematic as some people think.

“Parking was a concern,” he said. “People did bring up the loss of 19 parking spaces here on the right hand turn lane, but what they may not know is there are ginormous parking garages going in in several different places in Sugar House.”

The council will debate the proposal before another public hearing on the matter. Council members said they hope to have a decision made by the end of the year.
