PROVO — A man collapsed in the LaVell Edwards stadium just before kickoff of a BYU football game Friday night, officials said Saturday.

The man and his wife were in the area of their seats in the north stands at approximately 7 p.m. when for an unknown reason he fell backward hitting his head, said BYU police Lt. Arnold Lemmon.

Medical crews responded within two minutes and initiated CPR almost immediately, Lemmon said.

“They could never get his heart going again,” Lemmon said.

The victim was transported to Utah Valley Regional Hospital where he was dead on arrival.

Lemmon said he’s pretty sure it was a medical issue.
