SALT LAKE CITY —  A man who was out to eat with his son had a scare when he began choking, but a nearby police officer came to his rescue.

Three officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department  were dining out at Coachmans Dinner and Pancake House, 1301 South State St., when a boy tapped one of them on the shoulder and said his dad was choking.

Officer Tom Edmundson said they reacted right away.

“I immediately wrap my arms around him and put my knuckle into his sternum and start just pushing as hard as I could,” he said. “About the third or fourth try he finally starts breathing and says, ‘I’m OK.’”

Officers said it appeared the man was choking on small piece of meat. Officers said they were happy to get involved, as helping people is what they do.
