SALT LAKE CITY – A West Jordan man who caused the death of a toddler in a vehicle accident on Christmas Eve two years ago was sentenced Thursday, and the man could spend up to 45 years in prison.

Thomas Ainsworth was sentenced to between 1 and 15 years in prison for each of three second-degree felony counts of operating a vehicle negligently, causing injury/death.

Ainsworth was driving when he crossed the median and caused an accident on Christmas Eve in 2011. Colum Pack, 18-months-old, was killed in the crash and others were injured.

Authorities said Ainsworth was under the influence of drugs while driving, and they said the accident occurred as Ainsworth was reaching for his cellphone.
