Flooding causes evacuations, damage in Utah County

ALPINE, Utah -- Alpine City called for immediate evacuations after heavy rains caused flooding near the Quail burn scar on Saturday afternoon.

The evacuations affected residents east of Grove Drive from Box Elder to 300 North. They were allowed to return home at approximately 8 p.m., according to Chief McCrae, Lone Peak Fire Department.

As much as 3/4 of an inch of rain fell in approximately 15 minutes in the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rains fell from Santaquin to Highland and Timpanogas Cave, flooding homes and businesses, as well as caused accidents. The parking lot at University Mall in Orem had several inches of standing water as well.

The Brigham Young University versus University of Texas football game in Provo was delayed due to weather. Fans were cleared from the stands briefly as a precaution.

Alpine City is asking for volunteers to assist with the clean up efforts on Sunday. Anyone available to help please meet at Creekside Park at 100 S. 600 East and bring square nose shovels.
