SALT LAKE CITY – Rocky Mountain Power is helping to protect a flock of great blue herons by making it easier for them to build a home.
The company is putting up poles at the Great Salt Lake Nature Center in Farmington for the birds to build their nests on.
Rocky Mountain Power crews are installing new poles that have nesting perches on them. Officials said herons like to nest in groups, which is part of why the nesting platforms are helpful.
The project replaced existing poles that had become damaged or had fallen down. Officials said they hope that providing the nesting platforms will prevent the birds from nesting on nearby power lines, which can be dangerous for the birds.
