SALT LAKE CITY -- A man had to be rescued early Friday morning after getting stuck on a mountainside.

Crews said a man was stuck about 400 feet up a mountainside halfway between the State Capitol and Beck Street.

The man said he went for a late night hike with no climbing gear, and at some point he got stuck and started yelling for help. Someone eventually heard him and called 911.

Rescue crews said they used what they call a "pick-off" to rescue the man. They lowered a firefighter down to him, got him secured and then lowered him off the hill.

"It was fun, it was an interesting adventure, it is what it is," the rescued man said. "I got to a place where I was stuck on the side of the mountain and I couldn't find a foothold up or down so I just turned around and just started screaming for help, and I'm OK with admitting that."

The rescue began around 2:30 a.m, and took several hours to complete. The man was treated at the scene and is expected to be OK.
