WEST VALLEY CITY — The United States Postal Service announced they will update the preferred zip code city for some West Valley City addresses.

According to a press release, the change will affect the 84119, 84120 and 84128 zip codes by changing their preferred city from Salt Lake City to West Valley City.

The initial proposal to change the preferred city also included the 84118 zip code, which includes a significant population of Kearns. Residents in Kearns chose to keep Salt Lake City as the preferred city.

Officials said residents in Kearns expressed concern over the change, saying they did not want to lose their community identity. But residents and businesses in West Valley City responded heavily in favor of the change, saying they want to be identified and recognized as West Valley City.

“After 33 years, it’s about time we are recognized by the United States Postal Service,” West Valley City Resident Jeri Lynn Bliss said in a press release. “I am tired of arguing with people who insist that I live in Salt Lake City. I love my city!”

Officials said the changes will go into effect on January 1, 2014. They said the changes will be reflected in online retail databases, mobile programs and other applications using a zip code to populate the default location.

“We are excited about this result and appreciate Rick James with the postal service and our congressional delegation who helped support our community’s identity,” West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder said in a press release. “In our digital age, postal databases matter more than ever for getting e-commerce right.”
