SALT LAKE CITY – A charitable organization hosted a back to school bash in Salt Lake City Saturday, and they provided kids in need with fun activities as well as school supplies.

The event was held at the Salvation Army building located at 400 South and 900 West, and volunteers gave away about 125 backpacks filled with school supplies.

Major Richard Greene, Salvation Army, said they hope to help kids who may not have much to get excited about on the first day of school.

“That first day of school is so important to children’s psyche,” he said. “How well they enjoy school, how well they love school… so we try to make sure they have something that they can be proud of, that they can be excited about, so that when they go to school on that first day they really are excited about being in school.”

Fifth-grade student Jacob Vincent said he is eager for classes to begin.

“I’m happy,” he said. “I actually like going to school, and I’m sometimes mad that it’s summer break.”

The backpacks were filled with things like crayons, glue sticks, pencils and pencil boxes. Any leftover school supplies will be given to school principals to distribute to students who need them.
