SALT LAKE CITY – Hundreds of Utahns rolled up their sleeves Saturday and got to work painting nearly a dozen homes as part of a beautification project.

The painting is part of an annual event organized by NeighborWorks Salt Lake, and about 200 people participated in this year’s Paint Your Heart Out event.

Event organizers said they used about 100 gallons of paint to give 11 homes in Salt Lake City and Murray a new look with colors like “grasshopper” and “restful.”

Volunteers said the free painting is primarily done for people who are unable to do it on their own. Scott Scharman, district operations manager at US Bank, spoke about participating in the event.

“NeighborWorks really concentrates on beautifying the areas and taking care of residents and senior citizens and folks with disabilities that aren't able to do the painting themselves,” he said.

The paint, supplies and equipment were all donated by ProCom Painting and Sherwin Williams. More than 700 homes have been painted as part of the project since it began in 1985.
