MAGNA, Utah – Unified Police Department officials evacuated a Magna neighborhood at the request of Questar Gas officials due to a leak Wednesday night around 9 p.m.

Officials said about 30 homes were evacuated in the area near 2800 South and 8700 West, but just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday officials said the danger had passed and the evacuation order was being lifted.

Officials with the Unified Fire Authority said the leak wasn’t massive, but crews were worried that strong winds in the area could push natural gas fumes into homes where pilot lights on water heaters could ignite the gas.

Questar Gas Spokesman Darren Shepherd said someone noticed the smell of gas coming from a vacant home at 2862 South Cyprus Lane. He said the leak was traced to a pipeline near the gas meter on the home, and a construction crew was sent to dig up and repair the pipeline.
