SALT LAKE CITY — The family of a man known locally as “Mr. Downtown” has filed a wrongful death lawsuit regarding the accident that killed him.

Richard Wirick was 82, and he owned the Oxford Shop Shoe Store in Salt Lake City since 1951. He was killed last year after he was hit by a Utah Transit Authority bus.

Wirick was in a crosswalk at 200 E 400 S just as the light was changing. Witnesses said the bus sped up to get through the intersection and ran over Wirick.

The wrongful death lawsuit names the UTA and driver Cheryl Anne Kidd.
