The Salt Lake County Council approved an audit of its mental health care system after it made cuts to patient services.

Valley Mental Health officials said they were forced to cut free health services for hundreds of patients earlier this month because of a $5 million budget shortfall.

Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams called the cuts outrageous and asked for an independent investigation into the business decisions made at Valley Mental Health.

The budget shortfall was due to a reduction in Medicaid money that Salt Lake County receives from the state.

Council members said they’ll determine if any police changes need to be made to make sure residents get the care they need.
