SALT LAKE CITY -- A grand opening ceremony was held Friday for the brand new Salt Lake City Public Safety Building.

Public safety leaders said the new facility is a far cry from their old building, which was too small and had several safety hazards.

"We've had raw sewage in the building, floods, We've had elevators stuck. We've had fires believe it or not," said Salt Lake City Fire Chief Kurt Cook.

They said the new building's amenities are geared towards making the facility more inviting to the hundreds of citizens that will use it every day for generations to come.

"We want people to be comfortable in our space. We want people to come participate," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank.

The building will house the 911 dispatch center, an emergency operations center to handle major disasters and a number of other agencies who work together to keep citizens safe.

In 2009 Salt Lake City officials voted for a $125 million bond that funded the new Public Safety Building. Its one of a kind design makes it the largest energy-efficient Net Zero building in the country.

Public tours of the building begin on Saturday. For more information, visit www.slcgov.com/psb.
