WOODS CROSS -- The planning commission is scheduled to hear a man's proposal to sell guns from his home, a decision that has alarmed some neighbors.

Tyler Murri is seeking a home occupation permit for firearms sales. Across the street from his home in this suburban city, Ria Van Lent is nervous.

"The neighborhood is very family friendly," she said in an interview with FOX 13 on Monday. "Lots of children, and I think any business of that kind, just should not be in a family-friendly neighborhood."

Van Lent said she and some of her neighbors worried about traffic, property values and the presence of a gun business being a target for criminals.

"Who knows? Somebody might rob the place," she said. "You might have a shootout, which is not unthinkable nowadays."

Some neighbors were upset that a sign that says "public notice" on Murri's front lawn is the only indication that such a business was planned. The planning commission will take public comment and look at other impacts before voting on it.

Woods Cross city officials told FOX 13 Murri must comply with federal and state regulations before any business would be approved.

"He's not allowed to do any public display or things on the outside to draw customers in," said Woods Cross City Administrator Gary Uresk. "It's all done by the phone or Internet, and they just come and pick it up."

Murri declined to comment to FOX 13 on Monday.

The Woods Cross Planning Commission is planning to take public comment on the proposal at its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at 1555 S. 800 W. (Woods Cross Municipal Building).
