WEST JORDAN -- Police captured a wanted fugitive Sunday night who they said escaped police custody last week.

The capture started when a detective noticed a truck with four people inside near 5400 W 6400 S. The detective stopped the truck near 5900 W 6400 S and a woman exited the vehicle.

Police said Brian Platt, who was in the middle seat, then locked the doors and attempted to step on the gas pedal to escape. The driver stepped on the brake in an effort to keep the truck from moving.

"He's stepping on the brake trying to keep the truck from going. The truck's tires are actually spinning. Our officers said that the truck was actually hopping around right there because there was so much power from him stepping on the gas," said Lt. Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Department. "The truck, at one point, even hit our K9 officer that was right there."

Police said the driver and the woman who was in the truck pleaded with Platt to stop.

An officer fired shots at the tires on the driver's side of the vehicle. Police said they had to break the passenger window to let the K9 in. Platt allegedly fought with officers as they tried to arrest him.

Platt was eventually taken into custody and treated at an area hospital for dog bite wounds. Upon his release from the hospital, he will be booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
