SANDY – The Sandy Fire Department is using a water-powered oscillating monitor that will be used to wet down dry areas and prevent wildfires.

Since fireworks are legal to be set off starting Monday, fire crews are taking steps to prevent fires, and many cities already have enacted restrictions regarding the areas where fireworks can be set off.

Battalion Chief Robert Dekorver, Sandy City Fire Department, said they will be enforcing those restrictions in Sandy.

“If you’re found to be lighting fireworks in those areas, you will actually have a visit from either a fire official or a police officer,” he said. “They will educate on the areas that are prohibited. Continual lighting of fireworks in those areas could result in a fine of $500, a class B misdemeanor.”

Last year, Sandy created a program called Ready, Set, Go where firefighters showed residents living in open areas how to protect their homes from fire, and they will continue the program again this year.
