MIDVALE -- Garbage trucks in several cities in Salt Lake County are doubling as mobile billboards urging parents to take steps to prevent underage drinking.

The mobile billboards made their debut Thursday morning after they were attached to 43 sanitation trucks owned by Wasatch Front Waste.

The messages, aimed at parents, say:

  • "Parents beat peer pressure. Set clear no underage drinking rules."
  • "Parents are stronger than peer pressure. Set clear no underage drinking rules."
  • "Parents outweigh peer pressure. Set clear no underage drinking rules."

"It's such a positive message. We're not talking rocket science here, it's just about being involved in kids' lives," said Doug Murakami from the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. "We know that parents really have a great influence, even greater than the peers that the kids hang out with, so that's the message here today."

The program, now in its sixth year, has already carried underage drinking prevention messages more than six million miles through Taylorsville, Herriman, Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, a portion of Murray and unincorporated Salt Lake County.
