HERRIMAN, Utah – Locks of Love is a charity that encourages people to cut and donate their hair to those who’ve lost theirs, and the group was at a local elementary school Wednesday where students made the decision to give.

Girls at Foothills Elementary school had their locks chopped in order to help others. Dawn Opie teaches at the school, and she said the girls wanted to help those in a tough situation.

"It's just a great cause to donate hair to girls who need wigs because they get cancer,” she said.

One young girl said she was happy to help.

“I think it’s awesome… because it’s for a good cause,” she said enthusiastically while holding her severed hair.

Opie said many of those who donated feel a personal connection to the cause.

"We've been affected here at our school with different kinds of cancer, where two girls at our school have actually benefited from Locks of Love wigs,” she said.

Eleven students and three teachers donated Wednesday. Opie said their actions warm her heart.

"It makes me want to cry every year, and I will cry because it makes me so happy to see that they're so selfless and they want to give up their hair,” she said.
