SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City is home to some of the most extravagant open-air malls in the country, and now for retailers with a tighter budget there’s a simplified approach.

On Granary Row local businesses have turned old cargo containers into beautiful retail spaces. Granary Row is located on 700 South between 300 and 400 West.

The shops officially opened for business Saturday at 6 p.m. Kevin Blalock of Blalock and Partners Architecture said people have been intrigued by the uniquely constructed retail spaces.

“Right now the reaction is, ‘Wow, what's going on?’” He said.

Granary Row is on a site operated by The Kentlands Initiative, which is a non-profit organization. The site features everything from high-end clothing stores to art galleries to a bike shop. The retail spaces are even air-conditioned. Blalock said Granary Row also offers thirst-quenching options.

“This is the beer garden, and we worked with Uintah Brewery, and we've gathered a space for the adult crowd,” he said.

Organizer James Alfandre said Granary Row offers options for business owners who aren’t thrilled with traditional retail locations.

“For the entrepreneur it seems a little daunting to take on a year lease in a big space,” he said. “They can come and test their product out here without losing their shirt.”
