Capitol Theatre to close for renovations
SALT LAKE CITY – A popular Salt Lake City landmark will be closing for several months for renovations.
The Capitol Theatre will close on June 28 for a five-month renovation project. The project will include an expanded lobby, new restrooms, reception spaces and new handicap-accessible seating in the theater.
Construction for the new Jessie Eccles Quinney Center for Dance will also begin in late June. The space will be home to Ballet West, and it will feature new dance studios and company offices.
Ben McAdams, Salt Lake County Mayor, said the renovation will help expand the arts in the community.
“Today we are embarking on a journey that will expand the offering of arts here in the Salt Lake Valley,” he said. “We have a population that’s growing, and our arts population is growing right along with that population.”
The Capitol Theatre is expected to reopen on December 1, which is just in time for Ballet West’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.”
