WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Josh Powell may have had an affair in the months before the disappearance of his wife.

According to case documents released by the West Valley City Police Dept., a woman contacted them on Dec. 11, 2009, just days after Susan’s disappearance, to say she’d had an affair with Josh Powell.

When the woman made that initial call, police say she appeared intoxicated and would not provide them with more information about the relationship. Police were unable to identify the woman.

In late July 2010, an incarcerated man told detectives he knew a woman who was seeing Josh Powell. Following up on that tip, detectives looked at the initial Dec. 2009 call from the woman, noting that phone records indicate she called Josh Powell once, occurred on Dec. 12, 2009, and there was no conversation.

There were no other phone records between the two numbers.

In August 2010, a woman notified police that she had been having an affair with Josh Powell, who she knew as John Staley.

The woman, whose name was redacted, told police she had a sexual relationship with Josh Powell after meeting him through a dating service about six months before Susan disappeared.

The woman says Powell spent around $800 on her during the course of their relationship, and took detectives to several locations in the Salt Lake Valley where she says she and Josh Powell had sexual relations, usually in his vehicle.

She says she broke it off before Susan’s disappearance and, when she saw news reports on Susan’s disappearance, she realized John Staley was Josh Powell.

The woman told police she had contacted them on Dec. 11, 2009, but when they went to her house, she didn’t answer her door. She later refused to take a polygraph test and didn’t want to be involved in the investigation.
