SANDY, Utah - Austin Kafentzis is a great high school football player. He accounted for over 4,500 yards as a freshman quarterback at Jordan High School, and that number increased this past season when he lead the Beetdiggers to a 5A state championship.

He was named the National Sophomore of the Year by Maxpreps.com, and he's already received numerous offers to play college football.

"I've got BYU, Utah, Utah State, Wisconsin and Hawaii," said Kafentzis.

He may have a few track and field offers in his future. He went out for track last year as a freshman, and an injury led him to the javelin.

"I got shin splints and I sat out a week and I just picked up the javelin and just started to throw it around a little bit," said Kafentzis. "My dad started helping me out and each week I got better. Things happen for a reason, I guess. It just took off."

He went on to win the 5A title in the javelin as a freshman, setting a new state record.

You may think, of course he can throw the javelin, he's a quarterback. But he says there's more to it than that.

"You can have the strongest arm in the world and not be able to throw the javelin far. It's mostly technique and a bunch of little details that you have to pay attention to that will actually help you throw farther."

He hasn't topped his record yet this season, but he's taking dead aim at this week's state meet.
