SALT LAKE CITY — Flags were lowered to half-staff Wednesday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

This week is National Police Week, but Wednesday is set aside as a special day to remember those who died while serving in the line of duty.

At least 120 national, state and local law enforcement officers died while serving their communities in 2012. Utah Highway Patrol Troopers lowered the flag at the Fallen Officers Memorial at the Utah State Capitol Wednesday to honor those men and women.

Gov. Gary Herbert authorized the lowering of flags across the state.

“On this day we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have fallen or been injured in serving and protecting their fellow men,” he said. “We are ever grateful for the sacrifices of our peace officers and their families to protect this great nation and uphold the law.”
