SALT LAKE CITY – Several Utah children have been hard at work the past few months as part of the Salt Lake Children’s Choir.

The group’s singers hail from all over the Wasatch Front, and the choir director said the purpose of the choir is to teach children to love and appreciate music.

The choir is directed by Ralph Woodward, and the members are children between the ages of 8 and 15. Woodward said kids don’t need to be musical geniuses to join.

"I think it's potential that we're looking for, not skill, that develops later,” he said. "They're good kids. We aim high artistically. We strive for proper vocal production so they sound beautiful, and we use the world's greatest music.”

The kids said the choir is a good experience, and they learn a lot while still having fun.

"Everyone's friendly, and everyone goofs off a bit at one time or another,” choir member Aric Potter said. “We all feel comfortable here.”

"It's very fun,” choir member Dallas Haws said. “We sing fun songs. Some are from different countries and in different languages, and others are really beautiful, and it's just a fun experience to be here.”

Woodward said he’s seen some of his past singers go on to bigger things in the music world, but for him it’s more about teaching kids to love music.

"Our goal is to launch them on a career, on a life of happy singing that they can take wherever they go,” he said.
