SALT LAKE CITY — More than 500,000 books will be distributed throughout the U.S. in celebration of World Book Night.

World Book Night is celebrated each year on William Shakespeare’s birthday—April 23. Books donated by booksellers, libraries and financial supporters will be given out to those who may not otherwise have access to books.

Salt Lake City is participating in World Book Night by handing out more than 1,000 free books. Ralph Becker, Salt Lake City mayor, said they are trying to get the books to those who need them most.

“Particularly we’re focusing on the homeless population, but in other areas to get books in the hands of people so they can get the enjoyment and enrich their lives from books the way so many of us have throughout our lives,” he said.

Mayor Becker as well as Police Chief Chris Burbank and other community members will donate books to the Homeless Youth Resource Center, the Fourth Street Clinic, The Weigand Homeless Day Center and many others.
