SALT LAKE CITY — Chevron Pipeline Company was cited Friday over a pipeline rupture that caused about 21,000 gallons of diesel fuel to leak near Willard Bay Reservoir last month.

The citation is called a Notice of Violation and Compliance Order (NOV/CO) and is not a penalty, according to a press release from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

The citation details findings of fact regarding the spill, violations based on the findings and mandatory compliance provisions for cleanup and monitoring.

“We are working with the Attorney General’s Office to ensure Chevron is held accountable for the spill and its impacts,” said Utah Division of Water Quality Director Walt Baker. “This release has had a significant effect on a fragile ecosystem.  The popular bird watching and recreational area has been closed because of this spill.”

Chevron will have the opportunity to review the document and submit a response or challenge to the Notice of Violation within 30 days. Chevron also has 60 days to respond to the Compliance Order.

So far 408 barrels of diesel have been recovered and an estimated 70 barrels remain in the surrounding soil and water, the DEQ press release said.
