SALT LAKE CITY - A streetcar line under construction in Sugar House is on track to start carrying passengers by the end of this year, but Salt Lake City has yet to determine where the line will end.

The Sugar House Streetcar line connects to TRAX in South Salt Lake, allowing passengers from around the valley to travel to the eastern part of the city, but city leaders are undecided on which direction it will go after that.

One of the two lines will extend the line further east, traveling further up 2100 South past Sugarhouse Park and stopping near Highland High School at 1700 East.

The second option would run the rails northbound on 1100 East, ending at 1700 South.

"I've heard 50-50 of reasons it should go east, reasons it should go north," said Amy Barry, Sugar House Community Council. "We want to hear from our Sugar House neighbors. We want to hear what they think."

The city redevelopment agency says their studies indicate the 1100 East option will serve the city best in the long run.

The City Council will ultimately decide which path they'll choose after the last public comment session on April 23.

"Our hope is that we can pack the room. Not only with Sugar House residents, but with surrounding community members so they can weigh in and give their voice because this doesn't just affect Sugar House," Barry said.

Construction on the extension isn't expected for several months after the decision is made.
