SALT LAKE CITY - The Lone Peak High School basketball team was honored at the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Friday.

With a national first place ranking, Lone Peak's season is in the history books as one of Utah's best high school teams.

"We've played teams that are more talented than we are but we haven't played a better team than we are. We have kids that are willing to sacrifice for each other and that`s how we got to where we are," said Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis.

The team, who just won their third straight state 5A title, paid a visit to the state Capitol on Friday where they were honored by Governor Gary Herbert.

"It's so great to be here and such a big deal. We're very lucky to be a part of it and it's definitely fun to experience," said TJ Haws.

As part of the celebration, Governor Herbert declared March 8 "Lone Peak Men's Basketball Day."

"I don't think any of us expected it to be quite like this. Going on the House and Senate floors as well and then coming down and meeting the governor, that's pretty special," said Erik Mika.

Herbert also showed off some of his skill on the court, challenging the players to a little one-on-one.

"It was fun to shoot around with them, too. This old guy can still shoot a few hoops and make them go through and I had a good time shooting around with the team," Herbert said.

Herbert says that not only are the boys great players, but they're great people and good role models.
